| This shows the upper part of the left hand column, which contains the first part of a list of manors and their rents. There is some repair tape partially obscuring the central fold of the paper, but the writing is still legible. The ribbed appearance of old handmade paper is visible on the photograph. This is about the neatest part of the document bearing this particular script, which is cursive, but well spaced out. However, some letter forms seem a little odd to our eyes. The reference to Richard Beauchamp being seased in his domaine as of fee does not depict some nasty violent incident, but refers to the lands he holds under the traditional feudal system, as it was modified by this date. |
