Note that the diplomatic is exactly similar to that of a charter of English origin, except that it lacks a witness clause. The date is given in terms of the reign of the king, Edward III and represents the year 1347. He became king of France in the 14th year of his reign in England, hence the double date. Due to the fluctuating fortunes of the Hundred Years' War, he renounced the crown of France in 1360, then resumed in again in 1369, including the double numeration as if nothing had happened. He reigned for over 50 years. |
