Charter of Gervaise Payne to the nuns of Nuneaton, late 12th century (British Library, add. charter 47424). All images by permission of the British Library.
This is a private charter of the late 12th century in which one Gervaise Payne gives a mill in Inkpen to the nuns of Nuneaton, of the order of Fontevrault. The script is a rather spiky protogothic charter hand. The diplomatic of the document is highly standard for a private gift to a religious institution. About one third of the document consists of a list of witnesses. There is no recorded date. The language is Latin. The document is complete with the seal of the donor attached with cords.
