This miniature page depicts the Virgin and Child, and begins a section of hymns and devotions to the Virgin. The text begins with a large decorative initial and the whole is surrounded by a floral border. This form of page layout is absolutely standard for miniature pages at the beginnings of sections in books of hours. And just in case you are wondering what the white shadowy object is in the top left corner, it is an archivist's thumb, properly encased in spotless white cotton gloves. |
