Private charter, 13th century (British Library, add. charter 20592). All images by permission of the British Library.

This brief document is a private charter of the 13th century concerning the sale by one Allan de Witcherche of three serfs. The script is a calligraphic charter hand with some elaborate and exaggerated ascenders and descenders. The names of the witnesses have been added in a much less elegant hand. The private seal of the vendor is attached by a tag. The text is in Latin. There is no date written on the document. While this document is in a simplified charter format, it is not actually a grant of privilege but a record of a transaction.
